Building Stronger Partnerships for Prison Decongestion: TBF's Fruitful Engagement with the Assistant Controller General of Corrections
Meaningful partnerships remain at the heart of sustainable justice sector reform. In line with its commitment to promoting prison decongestion, rehabilitation, and access to justice, the Tunji Braithwaite Foundation (TBF) recently held a highly productive meeting with ACG Olatunbosun Ajibogun, Assistant Controller General (ACG) of Corrections in charge of Lagos and Ogun States.
The Foundation's delegation was led by the Executive Director, OlaOluwa Braithwaite, in company of Mr Olawale Idowu and Mr Christian Wogu. The ACG warmly received the team and generously devoted his time to an engaging and insightful discussion. Throughout the meeting, he patiently clarified critical issues, provided valuable institutional guidance, and shared practical perspectives on correctional administration and the collaborative role of civil society in supporting reforms.
The discussions marked a significant step forward in strengthening the relationship between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Tunji Braithwaite Foundation. Importantly, the ACG invited TBF to a formal follow-up meeting at his office in Alagbon, scheduled for Tuesday, 14 July 2026. As a prerequisite, he requested that the Foundation submit a formal application outlining its key requests and areas of intended collaboration in advance of the meeting.
A memorable highlight of the visit was a guided tour of Freedom Park, where the ACG walked the delegation through the site's historic prison archives and reflected on its enduring significance within Nigeria's correctional history. He further extended an invitation to host another informal engagement with the Foundation at the park, underscoring his openness to continued dialogue and partnership.
A Renewed Commitment to Justice Reform
This engagement has provided the Tunji Braithwaite Foundation with greater clarity, stronger institutional support, and a well-defined roadmap for advancing its prison decongestion and justice reform initiatives.
As TBF continues to champion the ideals of the late Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, the Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to promote a fair, humane, and efficient justice system where rehabilitation, reintegration, and respect for human dignity are paramount.
We sincerely appreciate the Assistant Controller General of Corrections for his warm reception, openness, and invaluable guidance. We also commend every member of the delegation whose dedication continues to move this important work forward.
Together, through collaboration, dialogue, and purposeful action, we can build a justice system that better serves individuals, families, and society as a whole.
The journey continues—and the future looks promising.
